Are Anti-yellow Hair Products Just A Buzz?

Anti-yellow products are all the rage in the hair colour space. Before jumping into the bandwagon, it is noteworthy to understand what this is all about.

Human hair consists of two types of melanin – Eumelanin (brown black) and Pheomelanin (red orange). As we bleach our hair, Eumelanin breaks down first, leaving us with red orange hair. Further bleach disintegrates Pheomelanin as well, giving us a yellowish appearance.

Typically, fashion shades like silver ash, rose gold and lavender violet operate at a level of 7 to 10. The yellow pigments at this level prevent us from attaining our favourite looks such as Ombre and Balayage.

To avoid this, we could use hair colours with anti-yellow properties. Alternatively, add in an anti-yellow toner such as the IRIS Anti-yellow Toner to the mixture.

Another method is to shampoo bleached hair with an anti-yellow shampoo before colouring. For IRIS, you could either use the Platinum or Silver IRIS Colour Shampoo. Silver is more anti-yellow but tend to result in a slightly darker shade. Anti-yellow shampoos also help maintain the coolness of colours after colouring.

Now that you understand the origin of yellow pigments and ways to reduce their side effects, you are free to express yourselves with the shades that you desire!
